Bowling for Soup rocker Chris Burney reveals he has lost two toes with graphic photos
Bowling for Soup guitarist Chris Burney has revealed he’s lost two toes a month after retiring from the band due to ‘recent medical developments’.
Formed in 1994 in Texas, Burney was one of the founding members of the rock band, which is best known for songs including Girls All the Bad Guys Want, 1985 and Almost.
However, after over 30 years with Bowling for Soup, it was recently announced the guitarist would be stepping down.
Sharing the update, the band said medical issues had made it ‘difficult for him to continue’.
Now, a month on, Burney has shared a shocking image online showing he’s lost two toes.
Posting on Instagram, the 55-year-old captioned the post in a jovial way, writing: ‘I’m a Free-nubbin, butt-rubbin son of a gun.’
He also shared a selfie of himself relaxing on a sofa while poking his tongue out.
Although he didn’t share details about what had led to losing his toes, many fans shared their support.
‘Sending well-wishes,’ Holly commented.
‘Healing well Chris xx,’ Julie wrote.
In June last year Burney was unable to play with the band at the Firenze Rocks Festival in Florance after reportedly suffering a leg injury. A month later it was announced he was taking a break from performing for health reasons.
Then, in January, the band released a statement confirming his retirement and sharing he wouldn’t be taking part in their UK 20th anniversary tour A Hangover You Don’t Deserve.
‘It is with a heavy heart we announce that Chris Burney has made the decision to retire from his stage-right post in the band he co-founded in 1994,’ they wrote.
‘Some recent medical developments, 30 years of rocking balls and touring non-stop have made it difficult to continue. We are bummed to not have Chris by our sides, but absolutely support his decision.
‘The future of Bowling for Soup remains bright. The three of us will carry on, with Chris’ blessing, and continue to build the legacy of this band we all love so much. We will not be replacing Chris or touring with a touring guitarist. You cannot replace a legend. We were brothers when we started this journey… and brothers we remain.’
Bowling For Soup is now comprised of Jaret Reddick, Gary Wiseman and Rob Felicetti. Their most recent album, Pop Drunk Snot Bread, was released in 2022.
Speaking to Kerrang! magazine, Reddick recently said Burney was ‘as good as he can be’ but also ‘as always, has got a joke for everything’.
‘And mentally, at least, he’s still firing away.’
