Danny Dyer drops huge hint Rivals season 2 will be even steamier
Danny Dyer promised that Rivals season 2 will have ‘plenty of naughtiness’.
The Mr Bigstuff actor discussed the Dame Jilly Cooper 80s bonkbuster adaptation, which was a huge hit when it landed on Disney Plus last year, at the Bafta TV Awards’ winners’ room, attended by Metro.
It centred on the rivalry between Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) and Lord Tony Baddingham (David Tennant) that begins to affacted the day-to-day operations of a TV network.
But this being a Jilly Cooper project, there were also steamy love affairs and illicit hook-ups between the villagers living in the fictional English county of Rutshire.
In Rivals, Danny plays married entrepreneur Freddie Jones, who embarks on a romance with Lizzie Vereker (Katherine Parkinson), the maligned wife of obnoxious TV host James Vereker (Oliver Chris).
At last night’s Bafta TV Awards, the EastEnders actor, 47, was asked to tease details about the second season of Rivals – and hinted it would be rauncher than its predecessor.
Pointing to his moustache, Danny said it was not ‘fashion’ statement, but had been grown to play Freddie ahead of starting filming on Wednesday. He also revealed there would be 12 episodes.
He continued: ‘It’s so lavish and lush. I’m very excited about it. I’m concentrating on bringing Freddie back.
‘This series is so much better than the first. It’s that difficult second album thing other than the writers and producers have absolutely nailed it. I can’t wait for people to see it, it’s a beautiful job for me.
‘If you want a bit of naughtiest in your life, go and watch it. Rivals has plenty of naughtiness.’
However, Danny previously told Metro that Rivals is not just about sex – it’s also a portrait of love. So much so, that he became teary when he watched the drama for the first time.
‘[Katherine and me] got quite choked up when we went to the screening. And that’s odd,’ he added.
‘It was a certain moment and it got me.
‘You look at each other as it’s weird watching yourself, but it’s just so beautifully shot and the music and everything just added to it.’
Rivals, though, may be among Danny’s last roles as he previously told Metro his plans to retire in eight years time at the age of 55.
He revealed: ‘That’s always my plan. To have enough money and just feel that I’ve achieved quite a lot, and then just pick and choose if I want to do stuff now and again.’
Rivals was nominated for three Bafta TV Awards, including the memorable moment category, for the moment Rupert Campbell Black and Sarah Stratton (Emily Atack) are caught playing naked tennis, but was not awarded a gong.
Danny won male performance in a comedy programme for Mr Bigstuff.
