Hollyoaks fans have been left absolutely shook after watching the newest episode of the soap’s Later series.

Later captivated fans for six series between 2008-2013. Due to the fact it airs a few hours after the normal timeslot for the show, bosses are able to go further with scenes and stories.

Later has become known for the edgier tone and because we don’t often see soap characters in the post-watershed world, fans were very excited tuning into the episode last night.

As part of the 30th anniversary celebrations, the instalment picked up from the crossover with Brookside. Donny Clark, played by Louis Emerick, was revealed to actually be Mick Johnson, a former Brookside resident.

The character was reunited with daughter Gemma Johnson (Tisha Merry), who’s now in a relationship with Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas).

As the drama kicked off, audience members learnt that the trio were being followed by some thugs.

Meanwhile, teens Dillon Ray (Nathaniel Dass), Lucas Hay (Oscar Curtis), Frankie Osborne (Isabelle Smith) and Vicky Grant (Anya Lawrence) were attending a party in Liverpool.

Dillon departed the nightclub though to share a kiss with Ste Hay (Keiron Richardson). Just as their embrace began though, Warren’s car hit them both. Ste’s son Lucas rushed to the scene, horrified to see his dad and boyfriend (yes you read that correctly) were fighting for their lives.

Elsewhere, the episode also saw a harrowing new storyline begin, as Dodger Savage (Danny Mac) was attacked and raped by a gang member called Griff (Nathan Hubble).

Fans couldn’t believe the storyline developments that aired last night. Taking to social media platform X, so many of them began campaigning for the Later series to return for good.

The instalment saw Dodger raped (Picture: Lime)

The first time Hollyoaks addressed male rape was back in 2001, and saw Luke Morgan (Gary Lucy) raped by high school bully Mark Gibbs, in a bid to belittle him. The story was praised for being groundbreaking at that time.

Hollyoaks continues to highlight the impact of male sexual violence, in its 30th year as Channel 4’s flagship continuing drama.

Hollyoaks has worked with We Are Survivors for other previous storylines, including when John Paul was raped by student Finn O’Connor in late 2013, and in a year-long footballer abuse storyline in 2018, where coach Buster abused his students.

Danny said: ‘There was a massive duty of care to get the storyline right and we worked with We Are Survivors. I’ve felt very emotionally attached to this storyline and the people we are speaking to and for. It has been a real journey.”

‘Hollyoaks have explored similar storylines before. There is something about the way this story is going to be explored. It is definitely going to be a new version of what is unfortunately an age-old horrific event.

‘It’s a character no one would be expecting it to happen to. No one will see this coming.’
