Emmerdale star confirms consequences for when Serena ‘goes nuts’
Emmerdale’s Serena Sugden (Casey Al-Shaqsy) is a mysterious figure. At one point, you think you’ve figured her out, but then a plot twist develops that leaves you questioning everything.
Her introductory storyline in Emmerdale saw her help a deeply troubled Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins). While travelling in the area, Serena found Charity by a lake. At the time, she was struggling under the weight of all of her secrets about baby Leyla and Doctor Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker), and didn’t know how to move forward.
Serena was incredibly kind and listened to Charity. After their chat, Charity returned to the village and told Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) everything. She had no idea for a second that she’d see Serena again, let alone discover that she’s a distant relative of Sarah and Robert Sugden (Katie Hill and Ryan Hawley).
Once she had reconnected with Robert, Serena moved into Emmerdale Farm. She clashed with Robert’s partner Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) quite a few times, due to the fact he believed Serena was just like John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth).
Aaron’s theory that Serena was bad news was seemingly proved when he found pictures of her and John. Serena had told Aaron and Robert that she hadn’t seen John in years, but the images on her phone confirmed that she had spent time with him while he was on the run in December 2025.
Serena eventually had the opportunity to explain herself. It was clear to Robert that his cousin had just fallen for John’s charm, just like many other village residents. She was given another chance, and a relieved Serena told Robert and Aaron that she wouldn’t let them down again.
Usually in soaps, if a character says something like this, a piece of information that contradicts it is revealed immediately after.
When she was alone, Serena was seen on her laptop, snooping through a USB stick that she had stolen from Home Farm. It seems that Serena hasn’t found what she’s looking for just yet, but continuing to dig for her answer isn’t a problem for this new face.
Confirming that her character isn’t ‘scared of anybody’, star Casey Al-Shaqsy has said that the only thing Serena is worried about is the fact she keeps being dishonest to Robert, and what ramifications her lies might have for her family if she was to get caught.
‘She has quite an aggressive background in the police force; you know, she talks to Robert and others about some of her famous fighting stories. As a person, I actually do kickboxing as well, so I relate to her in that way! But I don’t think she’s afraid of anyone. The only worry she has about being caught is that she’s lied so much.
She added: ‘As I like to say, it’s not really lying; it’s just not telling the full truth. But her being caught at Home Farm – after lying about being in the police, not disclosing how much she knew John, finding the photos, and keeping Charity’s secrets – feels like just another secret to add to the pile. It could get her into more trouble with her family, which is a problem for her. But she’s doing it for what she believes are good reasons.
‘Not everyone will see it that way, and people will have different opinions, but she thinks she’s doing the right thing. She is only afraid of the problems she might cause for herself and her family if she’s caught.’
Reflecting on the bond developing between Serena and Robert, Casey said:
‘I think there may be eventual growth, but Serena and Robert are both happy to see each other. They both love each other very much. I think what a lot of people can relate to is having a family member whom you haven’t seen in 15 years, but they’re still your blood.
‘You remember being a kid with them, playing with them, or seeing them at certain times. You might think your cousin is an absolute nightmare and hate them, but you still love them, you know? I think that’s what it is.’
Casey teased: ‘I think, regardless of what happens, Robert loves Serena. Obviously, if she did anything truly nuts, I’m sure there’d be consequences, but with what’s going on right now, you’re seeing a very familial bond that a lot of people can relate to. It’s a family member you don’t see very often, but the love is always there.
‘I think that translates on screen, which is why people keep saying it’s like she never left. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been; when you see them again, it’s like they never left because they are your family.’
The actress, who has appeared in a number of West End shows, didn’t reveal too much when asked about what lies ahead for Serena, but did confirm that she will ‘morally’ put ‘herself in bad situations for other people’.
